CME Conference

3rd Annual Brass Stroke Symposium: Trans-disciplinary Stroke Care
Department of Neurology

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the major cause of long-term disability among older adults in the United States. Of the approximately 5.7 million stroke survivors in the United States, more than 90% have a significant neurologic deficit. The direct and indirect costs to society are now approaching 60 billion dollars (American Heart Association [AHA], 2007.

In a landmark article published by Alberts et. al. in 2000 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, recommendations were outlined for the establishment of Primary Stroke Centers as an approach to improve the medical care of patients with stroke. Key elements of primary stroke centers would include acute stroke teams, stroke units, written care protocols, an integrated emergency response system, and stroke-related community education.

Critical to reducing death and disability from stroke is a healthcare system that is expert in the knowledge and implementation of acute stroke and post stroke treatment and rehabilitation guidelines. The Yale New Haven Stroke Center and the Yale University School of Medicine, as leading-edge practitioners of these systems, will provide this needed education to a broad audience of healthcare providers, and thus improve implementation of strategies to improve the long-term outcomes of stroke survivors. The 3rd Lawrence Brass Stroke Symposium will host regional and national experts in the transdisciplinary healthcare model, acute stroke care, acute and long-term rehabilitation therapies, and public health advocates for stroke awareness. This symposium will deliver presentations describing evidence-based practice interventions and evaluations to physicians, nurses, primary care providers, rehabilitation therapists, and public health service advocates who treat stroke patients.
